How to bid at auction – top tips from the experts

By Samantha Krimotat

Most people are totally blind-sided when it comes to bidding at an auction, Elliott Placks Director at Ray White Double Bay gives you his advice on 5 of the most effective auction strategies:

  1. Stand tall

Take a position in the centre of the room, it is very important to look determined, with strong body language. It is vital to show the other bidders that you will not be beaten.

  1. Don’t be afraid to make the first bid

If you start the process, then experience shows us you’ll have a better chance of still being there at the end.

  1. Try making a strong bid early

This has been known to take the competition by surprise.

  1. Counter immediately

This strategy gives the other bidder the impression that you’re going to keep going (and going, and going).

  1. Take your agents’ advice

Give careful consideration to what the agent recommends particularly about the reserve price on the day.
